ojZHRSAlLaA, Neil Segil uses stem cells to seek treatments for hearing loss, USC Stem Cell researcher Neil Segil seeks ways to treat hearing loss and balance disorders through the regeneration of inner ear cells.

His lab explores why lost sensory cells don’t naturally regenerate in humans, even though they do in non-mammals such as birds and lizards. To better understand these delicate cells, the lab studies how they develop and shape the complex structures of the inner ear, and can later be damaged by environmental factors, including loud noises, antibiotics andchemotherapy drugs.

Segil is also collaborating with USC Stem Cell researchers Justin Ichida and Takahiro Ohyama to reprogram skin cells into inner ear cells. They will then put these reprogrammed cells into a robotic screening machine, which will allow the scientists to test thousands of drugs at a time. The goal is to find drugs that protect against or reverse hearing damage, and that stimulate regeneration.,

7lzXPl6rYTE, Infant Hearing Loss, Hearing loss isn’t always a sign of getting older. Health experts at Lee Memorial Health System say it can happen at any age, even birth. One to two percent of healthy newborns are diagnosed with hearing loss. Even though newborn hearing screenings have been required by Florida state law since 2000, health experts say infants can develop hearing problems in the first three to six months of life.

Lee Memorial Pediatric ear, nose and throat physician Dr. Stuart Morgenstein says there are times when a newborn passes the hearing screening but develops hearing loss later. “Sometimes we don’t pick up the hearing loss until they are older and those kids are often speech delayed, showing behavioral issues, some have dropped grades in school.”

He says it’s important to notice how a child responds to noise within the first three to six months. “Does the baby startle? Does the baby turn its head to loud sounds? After a few months the baby should be responding to familiar voices. By 15 months they should be saying single words.”

“If the child shows signs of hearing loss within three to six months old, there are some treatments doctors can do, depending on the cause” said Dr. Morgenstein. “If it’s due to fluid behind the ear drum, we can put a tube in and drain the fluid and that takes care of the loss. Sometimes, we’ll use hearing aids. Now, if there is profound hearing loss and the hearing aids are not beneficial you could do what’s called a cochlear implant.” The cochlear implant can be surgically placed in both ears, if necessary, in children as young as six month old.

He says children born with infection, genetic syndrome, or even low birth rate are at a higher risk for hearing loss, making it important to catch the signs early.

Carrie: Excellent. today we are talking about where to start in therapy with your students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. And we are going to share some tips today about how to get started with that, some therapy ideas, and we’re going to do some giveaways here in just a couple minutes. And Erin why don’t you go ahead and introduce yourself and your experience with students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Erin: Sure. So, my career started when I saw Mr. Holland’s Opus when I was a teenager and fell in love with sign language and the deaf community. I went a little bit of a different path in speech, initially. My background is a Bachelor’s in deaf study. I learned American Sign Language in college and then I went to Gallaudet University in DC for my Master’s in speech-language pathology. My passion has always been deaf and hard-of-hearing kiddos. So, it has been from the beginning and it is my bread and butter and I am really excited to talk about it today.

Carrie: Absolutely! Okay so are you in private practice now or working in the schools or what are you doing?

Erin: I am. I just opened my own private practice in January. I’ve worked in early intervention, preschools, outpatient rehab, private practice, and now I’ve just opened my own. So, private practice is definitely my forte. I really, really love it.
